Where to Place a Hanuman Murti at Home: A Vastu Guide

Where you place your Hanuman murti shapes the energy of your entire home. In Vastu Shastra, the direction a deity faces, the room it sits in, and even the height of the altar all influence the flow of positive energy. This guide walks you through placing your Hanuman murti the right way — so Bajrangbali's strength, courage and protection fill your home.

Why placement matters in Vastu

Hanuman is the remover of obstacles and the guardian of the household. Vastu Shastra teaches that a correctly placed murti aligns the subtle energies of a space, inviting protection and removing negativity. A murti placed carelessly — in a cluttered corner, facing the wrong way, or in the wrong room — cannot do its work. A few simple principles make all the difference.

The best direction for a Hanuman murti

Hanuman is traditionally placed so that the murti faces the south or south-west, with the devotee facing south while offering prayers. South is Hanuman's natural direction — it is associated with strength and is believed to keep malefic influences at bay. Avoid placing the murti facing north or installing it so that it looks directly out of the main door.

Where in the home

  • Home temple or mandir — the ideal spot. Keep the murti at chest height or above, never on the floor.
  • South-west corner of the puja room — grounding and protective.
  • Near the entrance, facing inward — a Panchmukhi Hanuman is often placed to guard the home from negativity.
  • Avoid the bedroom, a shared bathroom wall, the space under a staircase, or the bare floor.

What to do, and what to avoid

  • Do keep the murti clean and offer fresh flowers, sindoor and a ghee lamp on Tuesdays and Saturdays — Hanuman's days.
  • Do choose a smaller idol (under 9 inches) for a home altar; reserve larger murtis for a dedicated mandir.
  • Don't keep a broken or chipped murti — replace it.
  • Don't tuck the murti into a dark, neglected corner. Light and regular worship matter more than size.

Which Hanuman murti to choose

For most homes, a Sankat Mochan Hanuman — the remover of troubles — is the most loved form, perfect for daily worship. A Panchmukhi (five-faced) Hanuman is chosen for protection and is often placed near the entrance. If you are setting up a new altar, an energised murti that has been purified at temple saves you the elaborate pran-pratishtha ritual at home.

Caring for your murti

Wipe the murti gently with a soft, dry cloth. Bathe metal idols occasionally with clean water and dry them fully. Keep the lamp and the area around the altar clean — a well-kept altar is itself an offering. Recite the Hanuman Chalisa daily, and especially on Tuesdays, to deepen the connection.
