How To Do Ekadashi Fast : Complete Guide

Ekadashi Vrat: The Complete Guide
Dates · Fasting Rules · Puja Vidhi · Significance · 2026
Twice every month, millions of lamps flicker to life in Hindu homes across India. Tulsi beads turn slowly in devoted hands. The mind grows quiet, and the heart turns toward Narayana. This is the day of Ekadashi.
In Sanatan Dharma, Ekadashi is called Hari-vasara — the Day of Lord Hari, the sacred day of Lord Vishnu. It falls on the 11th lunar day of both the waxing moon (Shukla Paksha) and the waning moon (Krishna Paksha) — giving us 24 Ekadashis in a standard year. In 2026, because of Adhika Maas, the year holds a rare 26 Ekadashis — an extraordinary window of spiritual merit.
Why Is Ekadashi So Significant?
The Padma Purana and Skanda Purana both declare that Ekadashi tithi is the personified protective energy of Lord Vishnu Himself. A demon named Mura once defeated all the gods and seized the heavens. Vishnu manifested a divine energy that took the form of Ekadashi and slew the demon. From that day forward, Ekadashi became the day of Lord Vishnu's grace and divine protection.
Observing Ekadashi is not merely abstaining from food — it is the offering of one's very soul at the feet of Narayana.

Fasting Rules — The Correct Way to Observe
Dashami (The Day Before): Eat a simple sattvic meal at night — avoid fried foods and rice. No meat, onion, or garlic. Sleep early and keep the mind calm.
On Ekadashi: Wake during Brahma Muhurta. Take a Sankalpa (vow). No grains of any kind — rice, wheat, lentils, flour are all avoided. Permitted foods: fruits, sabudana, water chestnut flour, milk, curd, dry fruits, rock salt (sendha namak). Chant Vishnu mantras and perform evening puja.
Dwadashi — Parana (Breaking the Fast): The fast must be broken after sunrise on Dwadashi. Offer bhog to Lord Vishnu first, then accept prasad.
